Hazardous Labour Geographies

About

This website is intended as a space to share key learnings from our ongoing ESRC project on hazardous sanitation labour, and as a wider knowledge, resource and networking hub for activists, researchers and practitioners working on hazardous labour across sectors and geographies, from manual scavenging and brick kiln labour, to construction, tea gardens and gig economy work.

Our framing of ‘hazard’ is not only to be taken in the literal sense of danger and risk to health and wellbeing from occupation (as in the case of manual scavenging), but of a broader recognition that certain people are subject to persistent forms of violence and harm, due to who they are (intersections of  class, caste, race, gender and coloniality), where they live, and what they do, but also that such violence is actively contested, negotiated and resisted in everyday life.

We invite you to join our network, or simply browse this site, to learn and share, with the aim to highlight increasingly precarious, invisibilised and devalued labour in a context of environmental, economic, social and political permacrisis.
